I've Been Here Since: May 6, 2017
HELP ME GET SEEN & ADOPTED!
1/19/2018 – With deep sadness, we have to announce that our beloved boy Chance has crossed the rainbow bridge. Simply put, we are heartbroken. Chance survived a lifesaving surgery last year and the team at Centro Medica in Puerto Rico have kept him healthy and happy since. Unfortunately, the cancer metastasized in multiple areas and began to cause trouble. When Chance was rescued, our promise was to give him a chance at a pain-free life filled with fun and love. With the help of his doctors and the hospital team, we can say we fulfilled our promise. He survived and enjoyed life longer than expected. He was vibrant and full of joy. He had loving friends that surrounded him with comfort.
Although he was not able to travel to NYBC, his charming personality transcended distance. He captured the hearts of so many and he gave a giant grin in return.
Chance, you were loved from the moment @soulsofsatos found you in an abandoned building and desperate for help, and you will be loved for the rest of our days.
May you run with the angels and brighten the sky with your smile.
Rest peacefully sweet Chance. You are loved. 💔
UPDATE 5/25/17- After needing a blood transfusion for his anemia, Chance had a massive tumor removal, Penile amputation and major reconstructive surgery. He is being watched closely for his anemia and is having his pain managed. This was a huge surgery and we are so thankful to his doctors for believing in giving Chance a second chance. With the compassionate care of Chance’s doctor, Chance’s blood levels rose enough for him to withstand the intense surgery. A Board Certified surgeon was miraculously available in Puerto Rico to perform this extraordinary procedure.
UPDATE 5/24/17- The biopsy confirmed that the enormous tumor is a squamous cell carcinoma. Chance is still severely anemic because this tumor is ruptured and is leaking significant amounts of blood. The Board Certified Surgeon feels confident that he can remove the tumor and give Chance a second chance, but this is a huge surgery that include penile amputation and reconstruction. Our first obstacle though is the blood transfusion. Since he was rescued, he has been playful and happy except this morning. Today he was lethargic and not himself. he CBC showed a significant change in his anemia. He is in guarded condition and please pray for a good outcome so we can continue the plan for his health.
The images are graphic, but this is the reality of some of the dogs of Puerto Rico. We received photos of this poor boy late at night. Multiple animal advocates begging to help him. He is new to this area where dogs are fed on a route, living in an abandoned slum among piles of garbage and filth. He is in severe pain, but is welcoming and thankful that he has been found and getting help. He is covered in raw wounds, malnourished and he is bleeding from his penis! The condition of his area is nothing like we have ever seen before! There is blood and puss, we are not sure if this is human inflicted, caused by another animal or because of tumors. What we do know is that he needs help! Our dear friends, Souls of Satos and Sand & Tan in Puerto Rico coordinated his rescue and got him to an emergency hospital for immediate treatment. He is howling in pain but was a good boy during the initial exam. He was immediately put on IV fluids and anti-inflammatory meds plus antibiotics. His wounds were cleaned and scrubbed and he is safe. But we need your help tonight! He will be seen by our regular doctors Monday to get a better understanding what has happened to Chance. We will update as we receive information.
